Why the Garage Door Gets Special Attention

A garage door is the largest opening in many houses, so its behavior in a storm matters. If one buckles, wind rushes in and pushes the roof upward from below while suction pulls from above, a pairing that has torn off roofs. That is the reason Florida's building code requires new garage doors to be tested against a specified design pressure.

Wind-rated models add stiffer sections, horizontal reinforcement and beefier track and hardware, and every model is listed under its own product approval. A few existing doors can be strengthened with a manufacturer-approved bracing kit. When none exists, we present approved replacements that suit your opening and your taste.

Signs Your Door May Lack a Rating

  • No approval label

Tested doors usually carry a sticker on an inner edge listing the design pressure. If you cannot find one, assume the door was never evaluated.

  • No horizontal reinforcement

Reinforcing struts spanning the back of the panels frequently, though not always, point to a door built for stronger winds.

  • Flexing during ordinary storms

A door that visibly bows or rattles in its track during a normal thunderstorm is unlikely to cope with hurricane-force gusts.

How a Rated Door Is Specified and Installed

  1. 1

    Confirm the requirement

We take the opening's dimensions and work out which pressure your home's size and exposure call for, before any door is chosen.

  2. 2

    Strengthen or replace

Where the manufacturer offers an approved retrofit kit for your door model, that route can be considered. Otherwise you choose among approved rated doors in the style you like.

  3. 3

    Install to the drawings

Fasteners, track brackets and struts are placed precisely as the approval drawings show, because the rating assumes that exact installation. Paperwork stays with you for the inspector.

Wind-Rating Questions

What separates wind-rated from impact-rated?

Wind-rated doors are tested for a design pressure pushing inward and pulling outward. Impact-rated doors must also survive a debris test, which matters for glazed doors and in the code's strictest zones. Your location and requirements decide which applies.

Can I just add braces to my current door?

Only with a kit approved for your specific model. Homemade bracing does not count toward a rating, and for some older doors no approved kit was ever produced. Reading the label and model tells us what is realistic.

Might a rated door matter to my insurance?

Possibly. Some Florida policies consider protected openings, and a properly approved garage door can be noted on a wind mitigation inspection. Your insurance agent can tell you what it is worth under your own policy.

Thinking Ahead to Storm Season?

A rated door needs ordering and permitting, which takes planning. Asking early beats scrambling once a storm shows on the forecast.
